Leif Segerstam, conductor
Niamh McKenna, flute
Jean Sibelius: Pohjola's Daughter
Aram Hatšaturjan: Flute Concerto
Einojuhani Rautavaara: Symphony No. 8 ”The Journey”
Niamh McKenna, who plays principal flute with the Turku Philharmonic, takes centre stage here in Khatchaturian’s Flute Concerto, a virtuoso adaptation of his Violin Concerto. The energetic concerto, drawing on Armenian folk music, is surrounded by Finnish music. Sibelius’s popular tone poem Pohjola’s Daughter depicts the title character spinning golden thread in the skies, while Rautavaara’s Eighth Symphony is a journey from a mystical landscape to a triumphant, colourful finale.
The length of the concert is approx. 2 h.
