Vesa-Pekka Kopakkala

Vesa-Pekka Kopakkala, born in Kangasala in 1965, entered the Tampere Conservatory in 1971 as a student of Raimo Sarmas. He graduated as a trumpet teacher in 1991. In 1989 he entered the Sibelius Academy as a student of Erkki Karjalainen and completed the level A degree with excellent grades.

In 1985 Kopakkala became a professional musician, when he started as an assistant at the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. The year 1991 he played at the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1994 Kopakkala got a permanent position at the Oulu Symphony Orchestra, where he worked as sub-principal trumpeter until 1998, when he was appointed as principal at the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2010 Vesa-Pekka Kopakkala worked as principal trumpeter at the Kymi Sinfonietta, but a year after he returned back to Turku, longing back to the bigger orchestra.

He has held locum posts at the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera, the Tampere Philharmonic, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, and the Guards Band. Kopakkala has worked as an assistant in almost all of the professional orchestras in Finland. He is, or has been a member at the orchestras, such as, Avanti! chamber orchestra, Finnish Chamber Orchestra, Savonlinna Opera Festival Orchestra, Vantaa Pops Orchestra, and the Turku Jazz Orchestra.

As a soloist, Kopakkala has played, for instance, with the Turku Philharmonic and Oulu Symphony orchestras.

Outside of work Kopakkala loves motorcycling.
