Lovely Italian tunes and Tasty Tones

Internationally acknowledged Finnish guitarist Patrik Kleemola performs as a soloist at the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra’s Chitarra d’amore concert Fri. 6th Oct. at 7 pm at the Concert Hall. Programme includes romantic tones by Italian composers from various centuries. Alessandro de Marchi conducts and the concert is part of the Turku Guitar Festival. New Tasty Tones series starts with the concert where delicacies are savoured from composers’ plates. Introduction to delicacies by music scholar, PhD Susanna Välimäki. Curious explorers series also starts on Fri. 6th Oct.

 

The first Tasty Tones series introduces us to dietary habits of Italian composers. The three-part menu served at the upper lobby consists of beetroot and ham in the way of Apicius, Ravioli alla Paganini, orange pudding and minty orange salad. Tasty Tones participants meet at the upper lobby of the Concert Hall before the evening’s concert at 5.30 pm. The concert opens with Otto Respighi’s Romantic ‘Botticelli Triptych’, where the composer depicts famous paintings such as The Birth of Venus. A similarly Romantic mood may be found in the Concerto for Strings by Nino Rota, best known as a film composer, and the mood piece Notturno by Giuseppe Martucci. Guitarist Patrik Kleemola appears as a soloist in the melodic Guitar Concerto of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.  Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 3 is based on lute tunes from the 16th and 17th centuries.

 

One of the most sought after conductors, Alessandro de Marchi’s repertoire reaches from early baroque music via Mozart and Haydn to late bel canto works. Lately he has often performed with Academia Montis Regalis which he founded. Since 2010 De Marchi has worked as an artistic director of the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music.

 

Patrik Kleemola, an internationally acknowledged Finnish guitar player has performed as a soloist on several important music festivals around the world. Kleemola is also known for his active co-work with composers. While being an active performer, he also teaches guitar and works as the artistic director for Turku Guitar Festival.
