Karol Szymanowski: Violin concerto no. 1

Gustav Mahler: Symphony no. 5

Simone Lamsma from the Netherlands is an internationally sought after violinist. In the opening concert of the season she will perform the Polish composer Szymanowski’s intense violin concerto from 1916. The concert is concluded with Mahler’s magnificent 5th symphony including the famous Adagietto with its beautiful lines.

Leos Janacek: Taras Bulba

Maurice Ravel: Piano concerto for the left hand D major

Johannes Brahms: Symphony no. 4 E minor

The opening rhapsody Taras Bulba by the Czech composer Janacek is based on a novel with the same name, written by Gogol. Ravel composed the jazzy piano concerto in D major in honour of a pianist who lost his hand in the First World War. The evening is concluded with Brahms’ last symphony.

Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf: Concerto for double bass and orchestra

Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony nr 5

Venezuelan Christian Vasquez is one of the most talented, young international conductors. He is interpreting a festive symphonic program where Shostakovich’s music is joined by von Dittersdorf’s concerto for double bass with another Venezuelan star, Edicson Ruiz, as a soloist.

Johann Andreas Amon: Quartet for horn and strings

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Divertimento No. 11 K251

The spring season’s first chamber music concert, held in the medieval Castle of Turku, features Finnish and European melodies from the Classicism Period. Finnish Crusell’s light divertimento is followed by German Amon’s quartet and Austrian Mozart’s divertimento in D major.

Johannes Brahms: Serenade no. 1

The couple Stefan Solyom and Catherine Manoukian embrace the audience with Elgar’s beautifully melodic violin concerto. During the second half of the concert we are treated to Brahms’ romantic Serenade.

Bach’s preludes frame the concert in the beautiful old Cathedral of Turku. The orchestra gets to showcase its knowledge in baroque music when interpreting concertos by the uncontested master of Baroque.

Johannes Brahms: Concerto for violin and cello

Eduard Tubin:  Symphony no. 3”Heroic”

Two masterful soloists, Anna-Liisa Bezrodny and Samuli Peltonen, crown this symphonic concert which is sort of a prelude to the opera the Marriage of Figaro, which is on the program for next fall. The concert culminates in Eduard Tubin’s heroic third symphony.

Happy Birthday! The Chief Conductor of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, world-famous Leif Segerstam is celebrating his birthday with a concert culminating in the premiere of his new symphony. Maxim Mogilevsky is also present to congratulate Mr Segerstam with the world’s most beloved piano concerto.

The Concert Hall gets into carnival mood when the young and brilliant conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali leads the orchestra in Stravinsky’s Circus Polka, originally written as a ballet for small elephants. Shostakovich’s Leningrad symphony will deliver the sensation of the evening with its touching character.

Bohuslav Martinů: String trio no. 2

Leos Janacek: Concertino

Johannes Brahms: Trio A minor for clarinet, cello and piano op. 114

In Martinů’s second trio for strings the composer’s rich fantasy is evident; the lyrical parts are contrasted by light folk music nuances that give the piece a mystical feeling. Janacek’s Concertino describes the spring and portrays talking animals. Brahms’s trio is a masterpiece with a melancholic feel.

Leevi Madetoja: Symphony no. 3

The charming violinist Kristof Barati from Hungary will melt hearts with Tchaikovsky’s beloved melodic violin concerto. Ravel’s Pavane for a Dead Princess will render the evening its emotional ambiance. The final piece of the concert is Madetoja’s wistful third and final symphony.

Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony no. 1

Segerstam and the internationally renowned violinist Pekka Kuusisto interpret Stravinsky’s neo-classicist violin concerto. The night opens with Sebastian Fagerlund’s prized Isola and closes with Shostakovich’s first symphony which was the 19-year-old composer’s final project at the Leningrad Conservatory.

Frank Bridge: The Sea

Benjamin Britten: Piano concerto

Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony no. 6

The Swedish top-pianist Roland Pöntinen is performing as the soloist in Britten’s piano concerto which is filled with panache. Before the piano concerto we will hear Bridge’s suite The Sea, which had a great influence on Britten with its romantic imagery of rolling seas, summer mornings and the moonlight. The night comes to an end with Prokofiev’s dark symphony no. 6.

A program of musical gems from the 20th century into our days is performed in the beautiful mansion Marjaniemi, situated on the idyllic island of Ruissalo only a 10 minute ride from the town centre. The concert will culminate in the premiere of two pieces written by the orchestras own musicians. Pyotr Tchaikovsky: Symphony no. 4

The playful symphony concert starts with Jaakko Kuusisto’s joyous Leika which means play in Icelandic. The trumpet soloist Andrea Giuffredi show’s his masterfulness in the playful Medleys that combine the melodies of Rota and Rossini. The evening ends with Tchaikovsky’s melodically rich fourth symphony.

Strauss gala

Richard Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier, suite

Richard Strauss: Alpine symphony

The Strauss Gala is conducted by Leif Segerstam. The orchestra will play the beautiful Der Rosenkavalier suite and the mighty Alpine symphony. This large symphonic piece requires over 120 musicians and is counted as part of the elite of symphonies with is magnificent horn parts.

Baroque by the River

The Kankas mansion with its unique historic ambiance will host the last chamber music concert for the spring. Baroque is the theme for the program which will be performed on period instruments. Before the concert there will be a guided tour of the property at 2 pm. The tour is included in the price.
