Top-notch cellist Marko Ylönen tours the world extensively and also performs frequently in Finland. His repertoire includes the ‘Song of hope’ by Zimmermann, a composer known for his uniquely modern sound and blend of various 20th-century styles and effects. This work is contrasted by the ‘Minstrel song’ of Alexander Glazunov, a sentimental and emotional work for cello and orchestra. As a starter, conductor Anu Tali offers ‘The burden of lives unlived’ by her compatriot Erkki-Sven Tüür, and the programme concludes with the crowning glory of the output of Edward Elgar, the Enigma Variations.
