Finland - Russia

Klaus Mäkelä, conductor

Sauli Zinovjev: Batteria
Erkki Melartin: Symphony no. 5 in A minor op. 90 ‘Sinfonia brevis’
Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony no. 5 in D minor op. 47

Klaus Mäkelä pits Finland against Russia in this programme. Zinovjev is one of the most interesting names in the field of Finnish contemporary music. He writes music of grand emotions, and Batteria is no exception. Melartin’s Fifth Symphony has its roots in Finnish National Romanticism. Both Zinovjev and Melartin were influenced by Russian music, and it is thus appropriate that the concert concludes with Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, which has been a favourite with audiences ever since being rapturously received at its premiere in Leningrad.

The length of the concert is approx. 2 h.
