Turku Philharmonic Orchestra

Outi Tarkiainen: Night Sun Variations (first performance in Finland)
Carl Nielsen: Violin Concerto op. 33
Jean Sibelius: Symphony no. 4 in A minor op. 63

Night Sun Variations reflects the lucid summer nights of the north when the sky blazes with an unending range of colours. The work is by Outi Tarkiainen, one of the most successful Finnish composers of her generation. Pekka Kuusisto is known for his fresh and imaginative performances of classics, and in this programme he takes on Nielsen’s popular and harmonically rich Violin Concerto. The programme of Northern composers must self-evidently conclude with Sibelius; his profound and sombre Symphony no. 4 is considered the composer’s most personal statement.
