Turku Philharmonic Orchestra

Jean Sibelius: En saga
Kaija Saariaho: Leino Songs
Jean Sibelius: Luonnotar
Claude Debussy: La Mer

Saariaho’s Leino Songs is a cycle of four songs to poems by Eino Leino. It is dedicated to Anu Komsi, who premiered the songs and also performs them in this concert. Sibelius’s tone poems En saga and Luonnotar embody ancient Finnish mythology. Luonnotar, inspired by the national epic, the Kalevala, includes a demanding soprano part, also performed here by Komsi. Conducted by Eva Ollikainen, Chief Conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the programme concludes with Debussy’s La Mer, conjuring up vivid images of the sea.
