An impressive programme of arresting music. Reich’s Different Trains harks back to the Holocaust in the Second World War, a time in which a journey by train could mean very different things indeed. Recorded by the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet in 1989, the work rests on a foundation of sound clips from interviews. Messiaen’s ‘Quartet for the end of time’ was written in a German prisoner-of-war camp in the early 1940s and also premiered there. The title of this demanding and sensitive piece alludes to the Book of Revelation.
