Jussi Markkanen

Jussi Markkanen (born in 1986) began his music studies in piano at the Vantaa Music Institute. His interest in drumming, which started in the school's music class, gradually led him to participate in the institute's orchestras, eventually switching his main instrument to percussion. During high school, Jussi had the opportunity to explore music extensively, from rock bands to big bands and chamber music to choir singing.

In 2005, his professional studies began at the Helsinki Conservatory (under the guidance of Tomi Wikström), igniting his passion for orchestral music. At the Sibelius Academy, he continued his studies with teachers such as Olli-Pekka Martikainen, Antti Rislakki, Lassi Erkkilä, Pasi Suomalainen, Samuli Viitanen, Sami Koskela, and Tim Ferchen. He graduated with a Master's degree in music in 2017 with excellent grades.

Markkanen joined the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in 2018. Before his permanent position, he worked temporarily in various orchestras, including the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and the Finnish National Opera Orchestra. From 2016 to 2018, he served as a percussionist in the Lapland Military Band in Rovaniemi.

He has gained orchestral experience from youth orchestras such as the Baltic Youth Philharmonic (2010), Britten-Pears Orchestra (2013), and Aldeburgh World Orchestra (2012). It was in the latter orchestra where he not only gained orchestral experience but also met his current wife, who played the French horn.

In his free time, he enjoys a variety of sports and going for walks with his dog. He particularly enjoys spending time in the kitchen, developing new cooking and baking skills at home.
