Sauli Kulmala

I began rigorous violin studies at the age of four with a firm intention of becoming a violinist. Although my career aspirations changed during my youth, violin playing remained a hobby throughout my school years. In high school, my interest in classical music eventually prevailed, and I never had to long for another breadwinning job thereafter.

When I was well into my violin studies, I tried the viola, whose sound possessed all the depth and richness that I had been unsuccessfully seeking in my violin. I decided to start studying the viola as well, in order to enjoy the wonderful sounds of this instrument. And so, the little violin was inevitably pushed into the background. This shift in melody led me to the middle voices, from which I still draw daily inspiration.

After gaining enough work experience from Rovaniemi to Southern Spain, I was delighted to convince my current colleagues in the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra of my musical skills. As soon as a permanent job was secured, I dared to buy professional sandals as a more secure guarantee of professionalism, which every self-respecting musician owns.

Outside of work, I spend my time with my wife and our three cheerful sons.
