Sebastian Fagerlund begins his three-year tenure as Composer-in-Residence with the Turku Philharmonic in autumn 2022. During this period, the orchestra will perform his music in concerts whose programmes he will also design. The appointment also includes a commission for a new work.

Sebastian Fagerlund (b.1972) has established himself as one of the most important European composers of his generation. His music has been commissioned and performed by prominent orchestras, conductors and musicians around the world. His extensive output includes orchestral and chamber works, solo works and operas. He often addresses fundamental questions of existence in his music. His powerful music-making approach and virtuoso instrumental writing convey a sense of musical drama, combining vivid communication with an acceptance of a wide range of music traditions in an intense and expressive idiom.

One of Fagerlund’s principal works is his Clarinet Concerto (2006), which launched his international career. His orchestral work Ignite (2010) was awarded the Teosto Prize in 2011. Fagerlund was Composer-in-Residence at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 2016–2017. His opera Höstsonaten [Autumn Sonata], premiered at the Finnish National Opera in the 2017–2018 season, has been received with acclaim around the world by critics and audiences alike. Fagerlund was the Artistic Director of the RUSK chamber music festival in Pietarsaari from 2013 to 2019, and he is Composer-in-Residence with the Tapiola Sinfonietta in the 2021–2022 season.

Fagerlund’s music is published by Edition Peters, and recordings of his works are available on the BIS label.
