Principal guest conductor period of star violinist Julian Rachlin to continue until 2022

The contract of violinist and conductor Julian Rachlin as principal guest conductor for the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra has been extended for the seasons 2020–2022. The contract strengthens the long-term cooperation of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra with various renowned artists.

Julian Rachlin has visited Turku since 2015, and he was appointed principal guest conductor in 2017. The renowned musician has established his place as the favourite of the audience in Turku, and he has brought several virtuoso programmes of favourite works in classical music to Turku. This autumn, Rachlin will be seen with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra as conductor and violinist on Thursday 31 October and Friday 1 November, performing the masterful Violin Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Prokofiev.

Violinist, violist, a.nd conductor Julian Rachlin is one of the most esteemed musicians of our time. For the first 30 years of his career, he has played as a soloist with the leading conductors and orchestras of the world. Rachlin is principal guest conductor for the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. He also leads the Julian Rachlin & Friends festival at Palma de Mallorca.

Born in Lithuania, Rachlin moved to Vienna in 1978. After taking the title of Eurovision Young Musician of the Year in 1988, he became the youngest soloist to ever play with the Vienna Philharmonic. Rachlin has toured the world as soloist as well as conductor. He has, for example, conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society, the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, several symphony orchestras in South America and Japan, and made his debut in the US as conductor at the Grand Teton Music festival.

Julian Rachlin will be seen as conductor and violinist of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday 31 October and Friday 1 November at 7 pm at the Concert Hall. At the concerts named Jupiter, Rachlin will perform the masterful and memorable Violin Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Prokofiev, composed between the World Wars. The virtuoso composition has power, speed, and fire. The concert experience is completed by Prokofiev’s Classical symphony and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s superb Jupiter symphony.
