This is an afternoon of literary musical delicacies. It begins in the world of aristocratic decadence as described by French author Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The film adaptation of the story, Dangerous Liaisons, is underpinned by the music of Couperin, Rameau and Handel. Barry Lyndon by English author William Makepeace Thackeray is the story of the rise and fall of a young man in the 18th century; Schubert is featured on the soundtrack of the film. Czech composer Janáček was inspired by the short story ‘Kreutzer Sonata’ by Tolstoy, which in turn references Beethoven’s eponymous musical work.
