Rodion Shchedrin: Music from the ballet The Lady with the Lapdog
Bohuslav Martinů: Concerto for Two Pianos
Jean Sibelius: Symphony no. 2 in D major op. 43

One piano has 88 keys, and two have 176 altogether. Kärkkäinen and Resjan perform a multi-faceted concerto for two pianos by early 20th-century Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů. Olli Mustonen begins the programme with music by Rodion Shchedrin, one of Russia’s best-known contemporary composers, in a mood of Chekhovian melancholy. Sibelius’s Second Symphony, full of pathos and grand gestures, is the most popular of all of his seven symphonies.
